Today is a day for reflection.

Due to unforeseeable circumstances, I’ve come to the conclusion, or perhaps realization, that business networking is about more than just business. As I’ve mentioned in previous articles, networking in general and business networking in particular are about relationships: forming them, deepening them and maintaining them. I’ve known that all along, perhaps like you, but today it really hits home.

Things happen in life that you would not expect. My last article, “Social Networking Sometimes Brings the Unexpected” refers to that. But imagine this – life and business are going along just fine and suddenly you have some kind of emotional, financial or physical trauma. It could be you or your family or it could be with some close friend or associate. Whatever the case may be, who can you turn to for help? For compassion? For prayers? For support?

You guessed it – it’s your relationships with people that will help when it’s needed.

If you didn’t have these relationships, the circumstances would be just “news.”

Just news.

How would it feel to know that your precious life was just a footnote to everyone else out there? A 15 second distraction to them?

I’m here to tell each and every one of you that you are precious! You are valuable to others in ways you probably haven’t even thought of. Most of us never think of ourselves as valuable. We only notice when we’ve screwed up and then we feel guilty and in some cases worthless (depending or not on our bank account balance) and beat ourselves up more than anyone else can. You know that little voice that says, “If you only knew” when someone compliments you? That’s what I’m talking about.

Or, if you’re like me, you have several little voices in your head, and they’re always arguing!! But that’s for a later article.

Live each day as if it’s your last. Heard that one before? We all have. If that’s the case, let’s make today a Friday! Everyone loves a Friday! That’s why we have a “Thank God It’s Friday” saying. So…we can pretend that EVERY day is a Friday and never have a stupid Monday again. Today is the Friday of the rest of your life! I know – my wife says I’m beginning to ramble, AGAIN!

I don’t care. Today is Friday and it doesn’t matter. I’m enjoying my “Friday” and I hope you will to!

When interacting with clients, prospects, or anyone for that matter, your expectations determine the outcome. Do you expect your clients, prospects or referral partners to never be available to take your calls, delay in returning your emails, demand terms you are not comfortable with, or switch to your competition at the slightest provocation? Or do you expect your them to happily take your phone calls, answer your email to them within two hours, offer terms that benefit all parties, and remain loyal to you because of your friendship?

It is worth the time to make a list of what you expect from the people you interact with, and what you want them to expect from you. Make separate lists for each category of people in your life: employees, employer, business partners you serve, prospects, business partners who serve you, family, friends, etc.

First get clear on your expectations, and then deliberately review those expectations before your interactions (for instance, you might want to read through the work-related ones in the morning before your go to work and the family/friend related ones before you go home). This gets your mind focused on how you want the interactions to go, and as you practice these expectations they will show up more often in your life.

To help you get started on your lists, let me give you an example from my own business. I am a law of attraction life coach. Some of my expectations for my clients include: enthusiastically refers other perfect clients, is on time and prepared for every coaching session, keeps her commitments to action, provides glowing testimonials, returns calls/emails within 8 business hours, always looks forward to our interactions, subscribes to and positively comments on my blog at least once a week, values my time, and is decisive.

Some of my expectations of what I will provide to my clients include: be fully present during our interaction, be on time and prepared for interactions, give them more value than they paid for, surprise and delight them, keep their information confidential, treat them with respect and professionalism, and act with integrity and honesty.

You can also make a list of what to expect from an event.

For instance, when I attend a networking mixer I expect to reconnect with 2 or 3 people I know, meet 2 or 3 new people and devote 15-20 minutes of conversation focused on getting to know them, feel relaxed and confident, write down any commitments I make, follow up on my conversations and commitments within 24 hours of the event, and develop 1 new relationship further by inviting the person to lunch.

When you deliberately decide what you expect from those you come in contact with, and from yourself, you focus on what you want, and thereby attract more of it into your life.

Network marketing or Direct sales is an industry that is often misunderstood. We all do some form of it often; however, some of us get paid to do it and some don’t. Direct selling is selling by word of mouth. For example: when you see a good movie and you tell your friends about the movie, which makes them, go and see it. You have done direct selling. Direct sales is misunderstood because it is still associated with a pyramid scheme. This association is false because pyramids are illegal as they pay money out (bonus & commissions) without having a true product or service to market (ex. Cash gifting, ponzi schemes). This is one of the most traditional methods of selling that is still used today because it works! Many companies today start business this way and some remain, for example: Mary Kay, Avon, Kirby, Electrolux & Clearwire are just a few. The existence of these power house companies support the fact that directs sales works! It has been around since the existence of selling and the proven effectiveness of this method of sales provokes companies today to adopt this method. People misunderstand direct sales based on the lack of knowledge about the industry. Direct sales and real-estate has created the most self made millionaires. This industry has been edified by some of the most successful people in the business. Former President Bill Clinton, Donald Trump and Robert Kysoki realize that direct sales can help ordinary people get extra ordinary results. Furthermore, they understand that there are no barriers’ such as education, economic status and social status or prerequisite which can prevent one from being successful. All that’s required is for one is to be teachable, coachable, ambitious, and willing to take action.

The pyramid structure although misunderstood and considered bad is not what is bad. What is bad is when the pyramid is presented as a scheme- when there is no money being exchanged for true services or products. The pyramid structure is the strongest structure known to man. As a matter of fact all organizations are based upon a pyramid! Think of one and ask yourself is there a pyramid in the organization. Even if there are only 2 levels in the organization-it’s a period. There has to be at least a top executive, middle management and lower management. A pyramid! Direct sales is now off of trial and no longer misunderstood because you have been informed. There are some great opportunities out there in this industry. Do your research and get involved with the right opportunity. A pyramid is a good thing. Get more!
